Concheperla

Set in 1960s Trujillo, Peru, we follow the young candy-seller, Poligena, who dreams of becoming the national marinera dance champion. However, when she decides to pursue this dream, she’s confronted with her neurotic grandmother, who is obsessed with looking whiter, and a society that is not all that different. Like many Peruvians, Poligena has a mix of Spanish and Andean roots, and she’s caught in between worlds and her own family.

First pitched at Gobelins, the animation school in Paris, the animatic and film will be further developed as my final thesis project. In this scene, we see a young Poligena learning marinera dance steps until she is interrupted by her grandmother.
